JIMMY MIZEN

Jimmy Mizen was murdered in May 2008. The day after his 16th birthday, he and his older brother went into a bakery near their home in Lee, south east London.

While inside the bakery, his killer – who had been cautioned by police several years earlier for harassing Jimmy’s brother – brushed past the brothers. A scuffle followed, resulting in the perpetrator hurling a glass dish at Jimmy and fatally wounding him. Barry and his wife, Margaret Mizen, hit national headlines when immediately after the murder of their son they spoke of compassion rather than revenge. In March 2009 Jake received a life sentence for murder.

FOR JIMMY

In 2009, the Mizen family set up the charity The Jimmy Mizen Foundation – which have now changed l to For Jimmy – because, really, that’s who they’ve always been. From that day the family have been determined to focus on two outcomes. We will not be beaten by his death and that something good will come from it.

The charity works with schools all over the United Kingdom, where Jimmys Parents Margaret and Barry share there story and help young people make their local communities safer and more peaceful.

To help there work in making communities safer, For Jimmy created Safe Havens,  which is a safe place young people can turn to if they feel they are in danger. Shops display a sticker that promises protection, building a safer community on your local high street.

Margaret, Barry and their eldest son, Danny travelled to Kenya, to take the charity message out there. In 2011, Jimmy's brothers, Bobby, Tommy, and Harry, his sister, Joanne, and his nephew, James, travelled to Nepal with some scouts and friends to do a trek around the  Annapurna Circuit in memory of Jimmy. His youngest brother George Mizen also did this trek back in March 2016.

The charity holds a lot of events each Year, our biggest event is 'Walking For Jimmy', a 26 mile walk from Richmond to Tower Bridge, which has taken place every year since 2013 having started as a way to celebrate what would have been Jimmy's 21st birthday.
